Tom Cruise won’t be starting his acting career in cruise control anytime soon.
The “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One” star and producer told al Sydney Morning Herald who is determined to be in acting for at least the next two decades, just like iconic screen star Harrison Ford. “Harrison Ford is a legend; I hope I’m still on course,” Cruise said. “I have 20 years to achieve that.”
The “Eyes Wide Shut” actor added, “I hope to continue making ‘Mission: Impossible’ films until he is old.” (No word yet on whether he will also continue to make “Top Gun” films.)
Ford recently starred in the franchise finale “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Fate” just before he turned 81 this year; Cruise celebrated his 61st birthday on July 3, just weeks before Dead Reckoning hits theaters. Cruise’s comments also suggest that “Dead Reckoning,” part one of the franchise’s supposed end, may not be Cruise’s last appearance as Ethan Hunt.
Ford, who confirmed that “Dial of Destiny” is his last leg as Indiana Jones, said during “Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace?” that he won’t be retiring anytime soon. “I don’t do well when I don’t have a job. I like working,” Ford said. “I love being useful. I want to be useful.
Similarly, film greats Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino have spoken out about expectations of slowing down their respective careers. “Killers of the Flower Moon” writer Scorsese has promised he still has stories to tell, while Tarantino has confirmed that the tenth and final film “The Movie Critic” will be his last feature film.
“It’s just time to get out. I like the idea of winning,” Tarantino said. “I like the idea of giving it your all for 30 years and then saying, ‘OK, that’s enough.’ And I don’t like working with diminishing returns. And I mean, now’s a good time because I mean, what’s a movie anymore anyway? Is that just something they show at Apple? That would be diminishing returns.”
