Get ready for a continuation of the recurring rotation between “The Super-Mario Bros.” (Universal) and “John Wick: Chapter 4” (Lionsgate) as #1 and #2 on the PVOD charts. Both films (each priced at $19.99) will likely add another two weeks minimum back and forth to the top of lists after a similar battle in the last two.

Meanwhile Netflix has an equally heavy roster of old movie releases, with only one original making the top 10 (in 10th place). Of note – “To Leslie,” virtually unknown before Andrea Riseborough’s surprise Best Actress Oscar nomination, initially peaked at #1 before dropping to the still notable second (behind the 2013 comedy “We’re the Millers “).

“John Wick” held “SMB” for a second week at #1 when released. But this week, “SMB,” the biggest domestic stage hit of 2023 so far, returned to #1 on both iTunes and Vudu. “John Wick” still leads on Google Play, but that site is usually a few days late, so the same could happen there.

With the next recent hit hitting the house not expected for another two weeks (“Fast X” is expected but unconfirmed after its fifth weekend), nothing is certain to challenge these two films. “Are you there, God? It’s Me Margaret” (Lionsgate) will be available on Tuesday. Despite its underwhelming theatrical run ($20 million gross over six weekends), it’s the kind of well-reviewed film that has the potential and need to do better at home.

Three recent releases, whose biggest gross managed to surpass $5 million in gross, made the top ten forays into the top ten. “Nefarious” (Soli Deo), a demonic faith-based thriller that crossed that threshold to enter all three charts, to fifth place on Vudu. “Hypnotic” (Ketchup), like “Nefarious” at $19.99, with Robert Rodriguez’s $65 million flop with Ben Affleck hit #3 on Vudu. “BlackBerry” (IFC), typical of that company’s usual starting price at $6.99, is #4 on iTunes.

“65” (Sony) and “Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (Paramount), both now $5.99, round out the movie chart across the board. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse” (Sony), at just $3.99 (making it unlikely to appear on Vudu for revenue count) is third on iTunes and fourth on Google Play. iTunes continues to add pre-orders to its slate, with the brand new “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” (Sony) at #10 months ahead of its likely availability.

What usually sets Netflix’s best movies apart is the interesting mix of library titles they license and their originals. This week hardly fits, with only one original making the list. Number 10 is “A Beautiful Life”. He’s a struggling singer who rockets to fame after a lucky story, which could be set anywhere. In this case, it’s Denmark, starring Danish actor/singer Christopher.

Over the weekend, “To Leslie,” which had virtually no stage play and barely made a blip when released on VOD, actually hit No. 1 on Netflix. It is still in second place. It’s the kind of movie that, had it been a Netflix Original, might as well have garnered some attention. There’s no telling how much all of the Oscar nomination attention and controversy sparked interest, but it’s another sign that there’s still some upside to getting awards attention.

iTunes and Google Play rank movies each day based on the number of transactions. These are the lists for Monday 5th June. The distributors listed are the current rights holders. Prices for all titles are per rental.
