The state of the breed
As the 96th Academy Awards approach, the conversation has begun about which films of 2023 will resonate with voters in a post “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once” world.
The first half of the year has already proved that moviegoers now have a very high bar for any type of film in the franchise, while original concepts like ‘Past Lives’ have done even better than expected. The mid-year “Barbie”/”Oppenheimer” dichotomy has driven the conversation about what kind of film still has the potential to succeed as the overall box office continues to struggle.
Fall brings eagerly anticipated titles like Martin Scorsese’s ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’, Ridley Scott’s ‘Napoleon’ and Bradley Cooper’s ‘Maestro’, which not only represent what is considered the top prize, but show how it is Streaming continues to integrate into Oscar conversations.
As Oscars 2024 approaches, IndieWire will share up-to-date insights into the films, directors and stars expected to be in the running to win American cinema’s most prestigious award.
