Lucrecia Martel is calling Marvel out over what she believes is the poor quality of the films’ production.
The ‘Zama’ director, who previously revealed she was approached by Marvel to direct ‘Black Widow,’ said The stage of the cinema who never ended up seeing the 2021 film directed by Cate Shortland.
“No, no, no. I haven’t seen “Black Widow”. I tried,” Marvel said. “It turns out that some of the Marvel movies are available on planes, so I’ve seen a few. I find the sound in them to be absolutely very bad taste, the visual effects and the sound of the effects.
He added, “It’s the selection of sounds that they’re linking to the effects, which is actually very bad. And the way the music is used is really awful.
Martel has given more details about his Marvel encounters in 2018 on “Black Widow.”
“They reached out to a large number of female directors,” Martel said. “I never imagined that Marvel could reach out and bring together a pool of directors and I would be part of it; I never thought it would be possible. I would have liked to make a film with them, but I should have provided something that I would have liked to see in that world.”
The head of the 2019 Venice Film Festival jury previously revealed that his first meeting with Marvel was part of the studio’s 10th anniversary.
“What they told me in the meeting was ‘we need a female director because we need someone who is primarily involved in developing the character of Scarlett Johansson,'” Martel said at the time. “They also told me, ‘Don’t worry about the action scenes, we’ll take care of them.’ I was thinking, well, I’d love to meet Scarlett Johansson, but I’d also like to do the action sequences.
He continued: “Companies are interested in female directors, but they still think action scenes are for male directors. The first thing I asked them was maybe if they could change the special effects because there are so many laser lights. I find them awful. The soundtrack to the Marvel movies is also pretty horrendous. We may disagree on this one, but it’s really hard to watch a Marvel movie. It’s painful for the ears to watch Marvel movies.”
