Greta Gerwig is pondering what could have been in Barbie Land.
The ‘Barbie’ writer-director has revealed that both Timothée Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan have been asked to make ‘special cameos’ in the ensemble film, helmed by Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. Gerwig channeled her motherly energy when she discussed working with the “Lady Bird” and “Little Women” actors again.
“Well, it always had to be a smaller thing because (Saoirse) was actually producing at the time, which I’m so proud of her for. And, of course, it’s brilliant. But it was going to be a special cameo,” Gerwig told CinemaBlend. “I was also going to do a special cameo with Timmy, and they both couldn’t do it and I was so annoyed. But I love them so much.
She added: “But it was like doing something without my kids. I mean, I’m not their mom, but I kind of feel like their mom.
Gerwig wrote and directed “Lady Bird” (2017) and “Little Women” (2019), both starring Academy Award nominees Ronan and Chalamet.
Ronan previously said People that she was “gutted” for not being in “Barbie”. “I should have cameo because I live in London and they were (filming) there,” said Ronan. “There was a whole character I was going to play: another Barbie. I was gutted I couldn’t do it. I texted Margot and Greta and I’m like, ‘If you’re doing any retake(s), maybe I can just walk through the background?’”
Meanwhile, Chalamet will showcase her singing prowess outside of ‘Barbie’ with the musical ‘Wonka’ and the Bob Dylan biopic ‘A Complete Unknown.’ We will also see him this fall in “Dune: Part Two” from the studio “Barbie” Warner Bros.
