After three weeks of PVOD play, “John Wicker: Chapter 4” (now $5.99) returns to #1 in two of the three major top ten charts with the lowest price. Lionsgate has delayed at-home availability for an unusual two months for this blockbuster theatrical release, thus making an earlier-than-usual price drop unsurprising. Nor is its return to #1 (except on Vudu, which it measures by revenue, not transactions) unexpected.
Vudu continues with the latest franchise release ‘Fast’ at No. 1. It dropped to No. 3 on iTunes, while an error almost certainly resulted in it being nowhere on the Google Play chart (it was No. 1 last Saturday ).
The allure of action titles is also shown on Netflix and elsewhere in the VOD charts. The Netflix Original Movie “Extraction 2” starring Chris Hemsworth (and an added Idris Elba) takes first place, with its 2020 predecessor in third place. “Kandahar” (Open Road) starring Jake Gyllenhaal in an Afghanistan rescue story, which grossed less than $5 million in theaters when it screened just a few weeks ago, had a strong debut at $19.99. It placed fourth in two classifications, sixth in a third.
Its strong response contrasts with the struggles of “Are You There, God? It’s me, Margaret” (Lionsgate). Though it grossed more than four times what “Kandahar” did and had some of the best reviews for a studio release this year, at the expense of a $19.99 rental price it only made the Vudu list last week. This week, it’s not on the list at all. “Beau Is Afraid” (A24) is another underwhelming theatrical release that could have shown some domestic life, but at $19.99, little so far.
“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” (Universal) is number 2 on all three lists (although it might have been one rung lower on Google Play if “Fast X” had been listed). Three other films hit all the charts: “Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves” (Paramount), “The Pope’s Exorcist” (Sony), both for $5.99, and “The Covenant” (MGM), also for $ 19.99.
Robert De Niro’s just-released comedy “About My Father” (Lionsgate), which grossed less than $12 million, was released on both iTunes and Vudu. “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse” (Sony) was in the top five of both iTunes and Google Play, with its $3.99 rental excluded by Vudu’s high revenue levels.
“Extraction 2” puts an end to an unusual situation where not only were there no Netflix originals no. 1, but for over a week no one was even in the top 10. the Wizard King”, a Japanese animated film, appears, scoring three originals there at the moment.
But the enthusiasm of Netflix viewers for recent mid-level blockbusters with a heart appeal shows again with Clint Eastwood’s “The Mule” #2 at the moment. The 93-year-old director-actor continues to have allure, with Warner Bros. Discovery recently greenlighting a new film from the legendary Eastwood.
