Editor’s Note: As Emmy season progresses, IndieWire will update this page with in-depth Emmy predictions from awards editor Marcus Jones. A link to each category will lead to ever-changing contender lists, as well as reports on which shows are doing well with voters, TV Academy rule changes, interviews with potential candidates, and more.
The state of the breed
Even before the Oscars finally arrived, Emmy consideration was already number one for the wide range of television programs that aired between June 1, 2022 and May 31, 2023, and those programs are now trying to win recognition from the voters of the world. TV Academy.
If last year, where all the pandemic-delayed shows returned to the fold, was Peak TV, we’ve already gotten close to the valley. With the ever-changing media landscape, there are several Emmy contenders that are no longer even available on their network’s streaming service. Shows that would have been Emmy-nominated starters in another year have already been cancelled. Network television primetime, in particular, hasn’t had any dramatic turnaround in a way that leads to awards attention.
Add in the fact that some big Emmy-winning titles like ‘Succession,’ ‘Better Call Saul,’ ‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,’ ‘Barry,’ and ‘Atlanta’ are entering their final year of contention, plus the curveballs of the Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series winner “The White Lotus” now competing in the Drama categories, and the Variety categories have been restructured in a way that now pits “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” and “Saturday Night Live” against each other the other, and 2023 is set to have an exciting Emmy transition race.
