Emerald Fennell knew Jacob Elordi would make a perfect charismatic, wealthy seductive playboy onscreen — and that’s without having seen Elordi as Nate Jacobs on hit HBO series “Euphoria.”

Elordi, one of the many breakout stars from the Sam Levinson-created show, stars as elite Oxford student Felix Catton in Fennell’s “Saltburn.” However, Fennell cast Elordi without having seen an episode of “Euphoria.”

“He just gave this unbelievably potent, relaxed, real performance of a person that could so easily not be real,” Fennell told Vanity Fair of Elordi’s audition, adding that Elordi’s performance skews the character away from being a caricature. Instead, in the hands of Elordi, the role of Felix takes on a layered empathetic element as he pulls classmate Oliver (Barry Keoghan) into his orbit, perhaps with sinister intentions.

“You can understand completely that no person would be capable of resisting this person,” Fennell said of Elordi as Felix. “But at the same time, you can also understand that it is also sort of an illusion, an illusion other people are projecting onto him — and he’s actually not necessarily particularly special or interesting. He just happens to seem like he is.”

Fennell added of Elordi’s co-star Keoghan that he is “so compelling” as Oliver and gives a “rare” performance. “We were looking to make something that is sort of visceral and surprising and dark and sexy, and that takes a lot of commitment,” the “Promising Young Woman” Oscar winner said.

Produced by Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap banner, “Saltburn” will be released by Amazon and MGM November 24.

Similar to Fennell, Sofia Coppola did not watch “Euphoria” in its entirety before casting Elordi as Elvis Presley in “Priscilla.” Elordi auditioned for the part, and Coppola “only watched one episode” of the viral HBO show before deeming it “a little too much.”

“He also plays a real dick on that show,” Coppola told Vogue of Elordi as Nate. “But he’s so sweet and humble as a person. I thought nobody was going to look quite like Elvis, but Jacob has that same type of magnetism. He’s so charismatic and girls go crazy around him, so I knew he could pull off playing this type of romantic icon. But we’re talking before we’ve even started filming so I can’t get too deep into it.”
